Jean Smart completed an unprecedented Emmy run at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth consecutive time for her role as Deborah Vance in Hacks.

A Historic Sweep

Smart is now the first woman ever to win the lead comedy actress Emmy for every season of a television series. Hacks ran for five seasons on HBO Max and concluded earlier this year. With this victory she also tied the all-time record for most acting Emmy wins by a performer, sharing the mark of eight with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman.

In her acceptance speech Smart dedicated the award to the show’s creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs, saying, “It all begins and ends with them. What a ride this has been!”

Competition and Context

Smart defeated a strong field that included Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and Elle Fanning. Her consistent excellence as the sharp-tongued Vegas comedian Deborah Vance has been one of the defining performances of the past five years in television comedy.

Career Milestone

Beyond the five wins for Hacks, Smart previously earned Emmys for guest work on Frasier and a supporting role on Samantha Who?. The 2026 win cements her place among the most decorated actresses in Emmy history.

Industry observers and fans quickly celebrated the moment as both a personal triumph and a landmark for women in comedy.
